Common Orthodontic Emergencies and How to Handle Them

  1. Broken or Loose Brackets
If a bracket becomes loose or breaks, it can cause discomfort and may affect the alignment of your teeth. If this happens, avoid moving the bracket or wire. Apply orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges and contact our office immediately to schedule a repair.
  1. Poking or Protruding Wires
Wires can sometimes shift and poke the inside of your cheeks or gums, causing irritation. Use a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire into a more comfortable position. Apply orthodontic wax to the end of the wire and contact our office to arrange an adjustment.
  1. Loose Bands or Spacers
Bands or spacers can sometimes become loose or fall out. If this occurs, try to save the band or spacer and bring it with you to your appointment. Contact our office as soon as possible to have it replaced.
  1. Lost or Broken Retainers
Retainers are crucial for maintaining the position of your teeth after braces. If your retainer is lost or broken, it is essential to contact our office immediately to prevent any shifting of your teeth. We will arrange for a replacement retainer as soon as possible.
  1. General Discomfort or Soreness
It's normal to experience some discomfort or soreness, especially after adjustments. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help alleviate the pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be effective. If the discomfort persists, contact our office for further guidance.
